Page numbers are incorrect? Having trouble with page numbers in Microsoft Word? Word can automatically label each page with a page number and place it in a header, footer, or side margin. It may look simple, but Page numbers actually comes in various number formats and can be customized to suit your needs. This article we will show you how to set up page numbers in Word 2016/2013, thus you can easily insert or fix page numbers in a Word.
You can easily inset page numbers to a Word document by using the Page Number button on the Insert tab.
Open the Word file you want to add page numbers and choose Insert > Page Number.
Choose a location, such as Top of Page, Bottom of Page, or Page Margin menu. Then select the desired style of header.
Finally, choose Close Header and Footer, or double-click anywhere outside the header and footer area.
Part 2: How to Add Page Numbers to an Existing Header or Footer?
If your document already has a text header or footer and you want to add page numbers, you'll need to use Header & Footer Tools. Do not add page numbers to an existing header or footer by using Insert > Page Number, or your existing text will be replaced by page numbers.
Double-click anywhere on the header or footer to to open the Design tab under Header & Footer Tools.
Under Design tab, click the Page Number > Current Position > select the desired page numbering style.
Page numbering will appear and you can choose Close Header and Footer.
Part 3: How to Remove the Page Number from the First Page?
If you don't want a page number to appear on your title page, you can follow steps below to remove the page number from the first page.
Double-click anywhere on the header or footer to open the Design tab under Header & Footer Tools.
On the Design tab, in the Options group, select Different First Page and choose Close Header and Footer.
Part 4: How to Start Page Numbering Later in a Word Document?
If you want to insert page number in Word from specific page such as on page 3, you can divide the document into sections, unlink the sections, and then insert page numbers.
Click the page in the document where you want page numbering to begin to inset a section break. Click Layout > Breaks > Next Page.
Navigate to Insert > Page Number. Choose a location select the desired style of header. Click Link to Previous to turn it off. This will stop Word from counting page numbers.
After that, delete the numbers from all the pages you don't want numbered and choose Close Header and Footer.
Finally, navigate back to Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers. To start numbering with 1, click Start at, and type 1.
Part 5: How to Restart Page Numbering in Word?
You can also restart page numbering on any page of your document by inserting a section break and then selecting the number you want to restart the numbering with.
Place the insertion point at the top of the page you want to restart page numbering for.
Click Layout > Breaks > Next Page to creates a section break and starts a new section on the page you requested.
Double-click the header or footer containing the page number you want to restart. Click the Page Number command. In the menu that appears, select Format Page Numbers.
